(KMOV.com) -- When Illinois residents buy diapers and baby wipes, they currently have to pay an extra 6.25% for sales tax.
State Senator Martin Sandoval proposed a bill to drop the tax to just one percent, which is the same amount charged for food and medicine.
For a family that buys 3,000 diapers a year, the suggested tax would save $45 a year.
Sandoval said he wants to help working families who need a break.
Governor Bruce Rauner has said he wants to broaden sales tax instead of cutting it.
