#Really?: Plate cheats registering cars in Illinois to avoid taxes
By Daniel Greenwald
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- If you live in Missouri, you just paid those dreaded personal property taxes.
But, plenty of your fellow neighbors don't pay; instead, they register their cars in Illinois, which bugs a lot of people and had Chris Nagus asking #Really?!
Nagus spoke with the St. Louis County Assessor, Jake Zimmerman, who estimates up to 1 percent of county residents could be cheating the system this way to avoid paying personal property taxes. That adds up to an estimated $1 million lost each year for St. Louis County schools and fire departments.
We have gotten a lot of questions about who to report this too. You can fill out at fraud complaint form at https://sa.dor.mo.gov/fraud/ . Make sure and select “Motor Vehicle Titling/Registration” on the type of fraud.
