HIGHLAND, Ill. (AP) -- The mayor of the southern Illinois city of Highland has suffered serious injuries to his spine.
The city posted on its website Monday evening that Mayor Joseph Michaelis fell at his home on Sunday night. Officials say the mayor was taken to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland and then transferred to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
Officials say Michaelis is resting comfortably after an extensive surgery.
Highland Police Chief Terry Bell tells the Belleville News Democrat that the mayor will need extensive rehabilitation.
Michaelis has been Highland mayor since 2005. He previously was a Highland police officer and police chief.
Highland has about 9,900 residents and is about 30 miles east of St. Louis, Missouri.
