FOLEY, Mo (KMOV.com) – Police are searching for a woman who went to her neighbor to return a borrowed item and allegedly tried to kill him.

Authorities are searching for Mary Elizabeth Britt who they say tried to kill a 67-year-old homeowner by shooting him with a 9mm handgun, however the gun failed to go off twice. The homeowner attempted to get the gun out of Britt’s hands when it accidentally went off, firing a bullet into his home.

Britt then dropped the gun and fled the scene in a 2005 white Dodge Stratus two-door passenger vehicle with Missouri license plate AG0-TY1. It is believed Britt may be suicidal based on the homeowner’s statement.

It is unclear why Britt allegedly attempted to kill the homeowner. Her current location is unknown. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says Britt has a history of depression and may have access to other weapons.

The investigation is ongoing.
