(KMOV) A police officer fired his gun after breaking up a fight in South St. Louis late Friday night.

According to police, two large groups of people were fighting in the street just after midnight at the corner of Louisiana and Osage.

As the group dispersed, authorities heard gunshots and responded to the scene.

An unidentified man in the group displayed a handgun to police. The officer asked the suspect to put down his weapon, but authorities say the suspect pointed his gun at the officer.

The officer opened fire at the suspect, but the suspect was able to flee the scene.

The suspect was apprehended a short time later by authorities but has not been identified.

A male victim was found with gunshot wounds just down the road at Louisiana and Alberta.

Police believe he had been shot in the crowd by another member of the group.

A gun was also recovered at the second incident.

The victim was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
