(KMOV.com) The Coast Guard is working with local fire and police crews to search the Mississippi river for a survivor that may have been injured or fallen into the river following an early morning collision between a tow boat and a fishing boat.
Just after 3:00 a.m. the Coast Guard was called to the scene of a boating accident just south of the Chain of Rocks bridge.
A tow boat pushing barges discovered that it had hit a fishing boat. The crew of the tow boat searched the 18-foot-long fishing boat and found a cell phone, wallet, fishing poles, a cooler and other personal items. No fisherman were found on the boat or in nearby waters.
According to the Coast Guard, the owner of the fishing boat has been identified as an avid fisherman who often fishes at night. The fisherman's family says he always has two life jackets on the boat. When authorities boarded the boat, only one life jacket was found.
Currently a search is ongoing for the fisherman. Search crews on the water and in the air are searching from the Chain of Rocks bridge to Alton.
