(KMOV) -- A major drop in enrollment could cost dozens of teachers their jobs at one Illinois district.

The Cahokia School District Superintendent told News 4 he had about 3,800 students at the end of the last school year.

So far, 2,700 hundred students are enrolled for this school year. He thinks those students are still in the district but their parents are waiting until the last-minute to register.

If the district does end up with one-thousand fewer students they could have to cut 30-35 teachers.

Classes start in Cahokia on August 20.
