(KMOV) – The Missouri Department of Transportation plans to take the first steps toward re-opening the westbound lanes of the Blanchette Bridge on Thursday.

This will make traveling between St. Louis and St. Charles a lot easier.

Crews hope to open two westbound lanes of Interstate 70 by the end of next week.

They could open the entire bridge by the end of the month. That would be two months ahead of schedule to get there.

The contract has had crews working a lot of overtime.

When asked if big bonuses are available if the work is finished early, Tom Evers with MoDOT said “you know there is always give and take with the contractor so, yes there is an incentive available.”

Evers said that incentive for the contractors is worth it because it saves area businesses and workers the cost of slowdowns and lost commerce.

The one thing that could delay the reopening is rain. A large portion of the new steel structure needs to be painted and the workers can’t work in the rain.
