BELLEVILLE, Ill. -- A company representing people applying for disability payments says it is laying off 65 workers, mostly in its southwestern Illinois hometown of Belleville.
Privately-held, 30-year-old Allsup partly attributes the job cuts to disability-program changes that include a slowdown in approvals by the Social Security Administration, to some extent because of automatic federal spending cuts.
Employees learned of the layoffs Tuesday. The company still will have roughly 700 employees.
An Allsup spokeswoman, Rebecca Ray, says the company is focusing on new opportunities and services.
Ray says each displaced worker is being offered a severance package and outplacement assistance.
