(KMOV.com) — Police have identified a Roxana High School student who was killed in a single-vehicle accident that left four others injured in Bethalto Saturday night.
Police say Samantha Owsley was driving a Volkswagen Beatle with four others in the 5000 block of Buchta Rd. just before 9:30 p.m. when she swerved to avoid a deer and crashed into a tree at a high rate of speed.
The four passengers, three females and a male, were taken to the hospital in unknown condition. Some of them were ejected from the vehicle and suffered severe injuries, police say.
Owsley was a star tennis player at Roxana High School and, according to the Madison County Coroner’s report, would have celebrated her 17th birthday on Monday.
School officials in Roxana met with students on Sunday to provide grief counseling as they came to grips with the tragedy.
While still in shock, those who knew Owsley say she was a loving person they can’t imagine is gone.
“It’s a shock, I don’t think a lot of us realized what happened yet,” one student said.
“She was very good, always involved in school, a beautiful kind-hearted person.”
The school will gather again on Monday offer support to the victims and all those affected.
Officials have announced all activities in the Roxanna School District have been cancelled until Tuesday.
