(KMOV) -- Fire crews battled a two-alarm fire in a De Soto apartment building Monday morning.
According to the De Soto City fire chief, the flames broke out in the basement of the six-unit apartment complex in the 500 block of N. 5th Street. A maintenance worker and a tenant doing laundry discovered smoke around 2:15 a.m.
The affected residents escaped without injury. According to the Red Cross the fire impacted five families. Nine adults and four children were displaced. The Red Cross was on the scene assisting and made sure everyone had a place to stay this morning.
The cause of the fire is unknown, but crews were on the scene all morning assisting fire investigators.
