(KMOV)-- Police say a man who died in a Saturday morning car crash may have fallen asleep or become distracted before rear-ending another vehicle.

The accident happened around 6:30 Saturday morning on I-255 in St. Clair County, near Columbia, Illinois.

Andrew R. Padberg, 47, was driving northbound on I-255 in a 2002 Audi TT Coupe behind a 2008 Volvo Tractor/Trailer.

Officials say the Padberg crashed into the back of the trailer. A witness told police the Audi’s brake lights never activated during the incident, which leads investigators to believe the man may have fallen asleep or become otherwise distracted.

Padberg was taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Louis, where he was pronounced dead. No one else was injured.

Several lanes of northbound I-255 were closed for about 45 minutes following the crash.
