(KMOV) -- A Metro-East high school student was arrested after a loaded gun was found in his truck.

The gun was found around 11:35 a.m. on Friday at Triad High School in Troy, Illinois.

According to the Madison County sheriff’s office, two students told a school resource officer that Robert Smith, 17, had a gun in his vehicle.

Smith’s truck was searched and the deputy found a loaded .32 caliber handgun in the glove box.

Authorities say the gun was never taken into the school.

Smith’s mother says her son never intended to hurt anyone. She says he was hoping to graduate this year. Smith is now suspended and could face expulsion.

The gun was secured and Smith was taken into custody. His bond was set at $35,000.
