ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The Canadian baby at the center of an end-of-life dispute is recovering well after receiving a tracheotomy at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center in St. Louis.

The hospital says Joseph Maraachli is making progress toward the goal of going home to Canada. The procedure was performed earlier this week in St. Louis after the Ontario hospital where Joseph had been treated since October refused and planned to remove him from life support.

Joseph, born in January 2010, has Leigh syndrome, a fatal neurological condition. But his parents believe the breathing tube could extend his life as much as six months.

Joseph is expected to stay at Cardinal Glennon for about another week, then go to Ranken Jordan children's hospital in suburban St. Louis before eventually going home.
