SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- University of Illinois students are being hit with a 6.9 percent tuition increase that will push costs at the school's main campus to more than $11,000 a year.

The university's trustees approved the increase Wednesday afternoon, despite concerns that fewer people will be able to afford an education there.

Trustees said they have to pay the faculty and staff salaries necessary to maintain the University of Illinois as a world-class school.

The increase is supposed to generate $22 million in the first year. Officials point out that's just a fraction of the $447 million the state of Illinois owes to the university.

New students at the Urbana-Champaign campus will pay $11,104 in tuition. Tuition will be $9,764 at the Chicago campus and $8,670 in Springfield.
