(KMOV)-- A Metro East grocery store goes up in flames leaving residents with few options for convenient shopping.

It happened at the "Food for Less" in Madison early Tuesday morning.

It took 41 firefighters and a dozen different agencies to fight the blaze.

The store was closed at the time of the fire. No one was inside.

The store was recently renovated.

The assistant fire chief with the Madison Fire Department said they believe the fire may have started somewhere in the back of the building.

There is still no word on how the fire started.

The Illinois state fire marshal and the health department have taken over the investigation.
