(KMOV) – Seventy teachers in the Cahokia School District were laid off Monday night after the board of education voted to eliminate the positions.
Like other school districts in Illinois, Cahokia has seen shrinking tax revenue, and is owed money in funding by the state.
Illinois has not paid Cahokia over $3 million in federal aid.
The district says eliminating those teaching positions will save $1 million.
If the district can afford to bring the positions back in the fall, the teachers will be rehired.
