Spring Training Report: Carpenter says he felt great

(KMOV)-- KMOV.com's Brian Feldman is in Jupiter, Florida covering the Cardinals and is posting
regular updates from spring training.

Mar. 21, 4:51 p.m.- With Lynn and Dickson gone that is the announcement you're looking for regarding McClellan. There's no one else to be the 5th starter. Its him. Even if Tony won't say it publicly.

Mar. 21, 4:49 p.m.- King, Hamilton, Cruz, Lynn, Dickson, Gast, Kelly, Matt Carpenter, Valdes and Robinson all sent to minor league camp. Only surprise is Carpenter. That probably paves the way for Descalso to grab last bench spot.

Mar. 21, 3:29 p.m. -Matt Carpenter did NOT make the team. Was told they want him to play everyday. Hopes to be back up at some point.

Mar. 21, 3:28 p.m. -Lots of transactions taking place right now. Nothing is official until the team sends out a release confirming them. Stay tuned.

Mar. 21, 3:20 p.m. -That beaning from Batista was in retaliation to Rasmus getting hit earlier. Apparently Tony was not happy at all when that happened. So its possible he told Batista to do it...but that's anyone's guess.

Mar. 21, 3:18 p.m. -Was in the clubhouse talking to Carpenter when the benches cleared on  the field. Batista was thrown out of the game for hitting a Nationals player...says he was told they believed he did it on purpose. It's unclear whether he did or not

Mar. 21, 3:17 p.m. -Carpenter says he felt great but had no command of his fastball. Was happy overall.

Mar. 21, 1:42 p.m. -Pretzel guy: Get your Pujols pretzels!! A million dollars each!! For a limited time only!!

Mar. 21, 1:36 p.m. -Just a hunch. But Carpenter does not seem very happy with himself. 4 runs in 4.2 innings. Leaves with a couple on base. Didn't seem sharp. Has one more exhibition to get right for March 31st.

Mar. 21, 1:30 p.m. -How bout Gerald Laird coming through with an RBI single? He's such a better hitter than Jason LaRue. That was a priority for the team in the offseason. Have a better hitting backup to Yadier Molina. And Laird's done very well. .364 coming into today.

Mar. 21, 1:19 p.m. - Back-to-back knocks by Pujols and Holliday give Berkman a chance to drive in some runs. The success of this offseason depends on him coming through in situations like this in 2011. (He flew out to center)

Mar. 21, 1:10 p.m. - Jim Riggleman attempts a suicide squeeze attempt in a spring training game. Wow. That definitely isn't something you see often.

Mar. 21, 1:01 p.m. - Of course the second I say that Laynce Nix drills an RBI triple off Carp. Then Michael Morse follows with another RBI. Man I am just killing the Cards today.

Mar. 21, 12:58 p.m. - Yet another offensive struggle today early in the game. Just like yesterday. The Cards poured on TEN runs in the 6th. It'd be nice if they could do that again for entertainment's sake.

Mar. 21, 12:48 p.m. - Well. Ya. The second I say good things about Skip he gets picked off at 2nd. Nice. I'll take the blame for that one.

Mar. 21, 12:45 p.m. -(Knocking on wood) That last ground out to Schumaker at 2nd base made me realize, I think, that Skip is yet to make an error this spring. AND he's hitting nearly .400 overall.

Mar. 21, 12:39 p.m. - Freese crushes one to the OF but it gets caught. Still not sure I've seen a game where he hasn't hit the ball hard. I said before how he's the teams' pick to have a breakout year. Everyone loves his ability.

Mar. 21, 12:34 p.m. - Carp gets out of the second consecutive inning with a double play. That's clutch pitching and getting a ground ball when you need one.

Mar. 21, 12:33 p.m. - Ugly, ugly error by Freese at third. Ball got under his backhanded attempt. He struggled early last year defensively but got better as the year went along.

Mar. 21, 12:24 p.m. - Line out by Adam LaRoche off Carpenter to right field. Been some pretty hard hit balls off him today. 2 hits. That line drive out. Making no judgments...simply observations.

Mar. 21, 12:21 p.m. - For a second it looked like Ryan Theriot had a hit up the middle but, alas, Ian Desmond gets to it and throws the SS out at first. Been a tough spring for Theriot. Hitting .167 coming into the game. He needs to turn it on or that Brendan move will look pretty bad.

Mar. 21, 12:13 p.m. - Nyjer Morgan singles off Carp to start the game but gets picked off after that. What he was doing is anyone's guess. Just terrible base running.

Mar. 21, 10:23 a.m. - Matt Carpenter working 1-on-1 with Jose Oquendo on having soft hands
in the infield. Discussing when to be aggressive with the glove in
snagging a ball and when to be soft with it. Oquendo teaches that as
well as anyone.

Mar. 21, 9:47 a.m. - Tino Martinez in the house visiting...

Mar. 21, 9:46 a.m. - When TLR says he doesn't want to make announcements until they're 100%
sure because they look stupid if they end up changing it...think about
Miguel Batista. Earlier in camp, Tony said a spot was "his to lose"
... Now he may not be on the team. He may...but may not.

Mar. 21, 9:42 a.m. - Among other items. Daniel Descalso is having a terrific spring. Tony
said Matt Carpenter has just "overwhelmed" people but Descalso also
doing very well. Those 2 seem to be in a battle for the final bench

Mar. 21, 9:40 a.m. - Bryan Augenstein remains a big surprise of camp. Tony said he was on
the list to get a legit look and has done well enough to get more
important assignments. Remains in competition for one of the last
bullpen spots.

Mar. 21, 9:38 a.m. - The more and more things go on the spring, we may not get an
announcement from Tony on McClellan as the 5th starter until right
before they leave Florida. They're not sure who is going to replace
him in the bullpen.

Mar. 21, 9:35 a.m. - Tony reiterates that Chris Carpenter will start Opening Day. It's easy
to see that Jake Westbrook, Jaime Garcia and Kyle Lohse will go the
next 3 after that. They're trying to decide, apparently, if McClellan
will go the 5th game or if they'll keep Carpenter on regular rest
because of the off day and move Kyle to the 6th game.

Mar. 21, 9:04 a.m. - No announcement from Tony regarding McClellan. Says there is no point
in saying anything publicly when there is a chance it could change for some reason.

Mar. 21, 8:06 a.m. - The schedule calls for stretching/conditioning at 9:30 (eastern) at
the stadium field. That's where Tony addresses the media in the morning.

Mar. 21, 7:48 a.m. - Lineup: Theriot 6...Rasmus 8...Pujols 3...Holliday 7...Berkman
9...Freese 5...Schumaker 4...Laird 2...Carpenter 1
