(KMOV.com) -- Police are investigating after an elderly woman was found shot to death in Centreville, Illinois.
Around 2 p.m. on Sunday, police were called to the 500 block of South 42nd Street to investigate after a man stated he found the body of an elderly woman in a driveway.
Police said 88-year-old Gladys Cockrell was shot in the head. She did not have a purse or identification. Vehicular hijacking and robbery are believed to be the motive for this crime.
The Major Case Squad determined that Cockrell was shot while sitting in her car near the intersection of 30th and Bond in East St. Louis. She was then driven to the location where her body was dumped and discovered in Centreville.
A few blocks away, police encountered the man they believe shot and killed the woman. He was in a car in a Crown Food Mart parking lot across from Touchette Regional Hospital. At least 36 shell casing were found where the suspect exchanged gunfire with police. Cortez Hamm was shot and killed.
Witness information and evidence found in the victim’s car concluded that Hamm was indeed the person responsible for Cockrell’s death.
No word if any officers were injured in the shootout.
