( -- A daycare in Washington, Missouri where eight children were found sleeping is the latest site of a meth lab.

Police closed in on a residence in the 1600 block of East 3rd Parkway in Washington, Missouri to bust up a meth lab, but are surprised to find that the owner was also running an unlicensed daycare business.

Authorities got a search warrant to search the residence around 1 p.m. on Saturday after a male occupant had recently been investigated for narcotics.  When officers arrived at the residence, they knocked on the front door, but nobody answered.  Officers made their way into the house through a basement garage.

After police were inside, they found eight children sleeping.  According to police, a woman inside the home had drug paraphernalia in her hand when they arrived.  Upon further investigation, police found meth and a scale in a make-shift office and chemicals and debris in the basement garage.  All the rooms where the dangerous chemicals and drugs were kept were unlocked.  Police said the children could have gotten their hands on the illegal substances and possibly injured.

All parents were contacted and each child was evaluated by a pediatrician.  Police did not say if any of the children were injured, but according to a pediatrician, children could possibly experience asthmatic conditions, contamination from the meth cooking process and complications from exposure to hydrogen-chloride gas.

Some children reported that the male occupant would often lock himself in the garage for extended periods of time.  Officials said the two occupants were husband and wife and two of the children found in the home belonged to the suspects.

Police are still searching for the male suspect.
