Stove cited as reason for deadly Roxana fire

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Inquest testimony shows a faulty stove is to blame for a Roxana fire that left two children dead of smoke inhalation last month.

The Telegraph in Alton reports Wednesday that the mother of 6-year-old Jason Gresham and 5-year-old Sky Gresham testified that before the Feb. 5 fire the stove wouldn't turn off and sometimes would come on by itself.

The children died at an Alton hospital after the blaze despite several attempts by firefighters to reach them and efforts by their mother and her boyfriend to get them out. The newspaper reports the jury ruled their deaths accidental.

Roxana Police Department Sgt. Lee Bazzell testified there was no neglect or criminal behavior in connection with the children's deaths.
