(KMOV) – The Belleville School District just announced that 41 employees, including 18 teachers and one nurse, will be laid off at the end of the school year.
School districts must notify teachers 45 days before the end of the school year if they are going to be laid off, which means making staffing decisions at a time when the district is a long way from knowing what its numbers will be for the next school year.
The district says the drastic measure is necessary because the state owes the district nearly $2 million. That money is supposed to pay for mandated services like free or reduced breakfasts and lunches, special education and transportation.
The funds are supposed to come in quarterly payments during the school year, and the district just got word this week about the first payment.
Of the 41 employees who have been told they will be let go, the district might be able to afford some or maybe all of them. However, the district won’t know for sure until late in the summer.
