CARBONDALE, Ill. (AP) -- A former assistant at Southern Illinois from 1985 to 1994 is back on the school's sidelines as an associate coach, this time under a coach who played under him.
The Carbondale school's announcement that Ron Smith has joined Chris Lowery's staff came five days after the Salukis' athletics director, Mario Moccia, said changes involving Lowery's assistants would come after the program's 13-19 finish this season.
Smith is a 34-year coaching veteran who during his previous time as a Salukis' assistant under Rich Herrin helped Southern Illinois to six-straight postseason bids. Lowery played during that time at Southern from 1990 to 1994.
During the past nine seasons, Smith had been an assistant at Northern Iowa, then at Iowa State.
Smith is a graduate of Benton High School and Illinois State.
