(KMOV)-- A man is facing two charges after police say he sent a white substance and threatening letter to a family in Madison County .
Gary Smith, 67, allegedly sent the substance on June 19. The letter stated the family’s hands were on fire, they had been infected with disease, and they should report to the hospital immediately.
Smith was indicted for Mailing a Threatening Communication and Making a False Threat.
If convicted, he could serve up to ten years in prison, pay a $250,000 fine, and serve three years of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the FBI, the United States Postal Inspector, and the Illinois State Police.
