Coalition seeks to bolster region's race relations

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- Southern Illinois’ top federal prosecutor is joining the region’s law enforcers, clergy and community leaders in trying to bolster racial harmony. Community leaders believe racial relations frayed after the August shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

U.S. Attorney Stephen Wigginton says a news conference is planned for Wednesday to announce creation of a coalition designed to bolster race relations.

The effort comes nearly three months after the 18-year-old Brown’s shooting death by Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson spurred continued protests around St. Louis.

Many of the demonstrators demanding the Wilson is charged. A St. Louis County grand jury is weighing that, and the Justice Department also is investigating.
