ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Police said an 11-year-old child was hit by a truck in St. Charles Friday evening and was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
Police said the child was hit in the 700 block South Riverside Drive. Police initially told News 4 the child was killed, but later said he was flown to a St. Louis hospital.
The St. Charles Police Department placed officers to direct traffic along Main Street during the Halloween event, but only one block away, there were no officers and no one monitoring cars speeding by which happened to be the area was where the child was struck.
Witnesses told News 4 the child, who was dressed in a costume for Halloween, was with family members when he was struck. The investigation into the accident is ongoing and police said they are still working to determine how fast the driver was going.
"I wish more people were mindful of kids crossing the street," said one parent, John Shell. "For me, it just makes me more mindful and more careful with my kids."
No charges have been filed in the case.
