St. Louis company fined 52K for workplace hazards

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A St. Louis steel fabricator has been fined more than $50,000 by a federal agency for 15 workplace safety violations.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration fined Continental Fabricators Inc. following an unspecified number of employee injuries that included broken bones, sprains and muscle injuries.

A Tuesday OSHA news release identified problems with electrical hazards, a lack of emergency stop devices and inadequate flame-retardant clothing for welders and is proposing a $52,500 fine.

Continental Fabricators has 15 business days to contest the citation. Vice president Jim Adams said the company was reviewing the OSHA investigation but would otherwise not comment.
