ST. LOUIS, Mo. (BaseballStL) -- Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright had elbow surgery to "trim" a small piece of cartilage from his right elbow, the team announced in a news release Friday.
Following a MRI earlier in the week, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that Wainwright, who went 20-9 with a 2.38 ERA in 2014, would not need surgery to repair lingering issues he was experiencing. Wainwright, however, requested additional tests and a second MRI, resulting in Friday's surgery.
Wainwright had well-documented struggles in both Game 1 of the NLDS and NLCS. He pitched much better in Game 5 of the NLCS against the Giants, giving up just two runs in 7 innings.
The surgery is considered minor. Wainwright will begin a throwing program in eight weeks.
