Authorities say the police car was heading westbound on Bond with its lights and sirens on, responding to a call for “shots fired,” when it attempted to pass a passenger car that was making a left hand turn into Touchette Hospital. The officer’s car traveled into the eastbound lanes of the roadway and struck the passenger vehicle, which hit a utility pole.

The driver of the passenger vehicle, later identified as Richard Hester, was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The police officer suffered minor injuries and was treated on the scene of the accident.

The Illinois State Police is handling the crash investigation.
