(CNN) – Exercising while listening to music may seem like an obvious thing to do but a new study shows music might do more than you think during a workout.
A study at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario shows a link between listening to music and higher intensity workouts.
Participants in the study took place in high intensity workouts, short bursts of high energy followed by periods of rest. First they would do the workout without music, then with a custom playlist of their favorite songs.
Subjects reported both workouts felt the same but the power output recorded was substantially higher when they listened to their favorite songs.
The study concluded that every participant worked harder with music without realizing it.
