ELBERRY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- In Elsberry, Sgt. Michael Bales had helped patrol the streets for the past couple years.

Bales worked his way up to become number two in command at the police department. Chief of Police Brian Jeffries says he considers Bales an outstanding officer and he did a great job.

But now Bales is facing serious charges of stealing $37,000 in cash, a gun, a ring and an iPod from his stepmother’s home.

“It's still surprising yes,” Bales said. “We're all a close-knit family out here and this is one of our own.”

The apartment manager at the O’Fallon complex where Bales lived told police he'd been late with his rent for several months and owed utility bills. Three days after the burglary in January of 2013 the rent and bills were paid off.

Police said Bales did not cooperate with investigators.

He was released from jail after posting a $30,000 bond.
