(FootballStL) - Rams punter Johnny Hekker was a quarterback in high school in suburban Seattle, so he knows how to throw a pass. Still, a pass off a fake punt with less than three minutes to play, and backed up on your own 18 yard line was a high pressure situation. Hekker was hoping he wouldn’t blow it.
“I was thinking, wow, you better complete this dang pass,” said Hekker. “As a punter you get a finite amount of opportunities. You gotta make the most of them.”
He certainly made that most of his chance, completing an 18 yard pass to Benny Cunningham for a first down that helped seal the Rams 28-26 victory over the Seahawks.
“Risky?” asked offensive lineman Rodger Saffold with a smile. “That’s Johnny Hekker out there man. He’s got the best completion percentage in the last three years.”
Hekker has completed five of his six pass attempts in the NFL, including a touchdown pass on a fake field goal to Danny Amendola to help beat the Seahawks 19-12 in 2012.
Hekker was a big Seahawks fan in his youth, and was getting a lot of texts messages from old friends disappointed that he would make such a big play to beat the Seahawks.
“My friends are conflicted. Happy for me, but upset we had to do it against the Hawks. All I can say is “Go Rams” on that one.”
