Body found during Metro-East police chase ID'd

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities have identified the man whose body was found in some weeds when an East St. Louis police officer noticed a foul odor while trying to catch a traffic offense suspect.

East St. Louis Police Chief Lenzie Stewart says Lt. Lance Murphy found the body Wednesday night while he was chasing a motorist who ran away from the car after Murphy stopped him.

Illinois State Police officials say the body has been preliminarily identified as 53-year-old Michael Parker of Granite City. Authorities say Parker was last seen in East St. Louis on Feb. 5 and his family reported him missing a few days later. An autopsy is planned.

The Illinois State Police, the St. Clair County coroner's office and the Granite City Police are investigating.
