(KMOV) -- Federal stimulus money is paying for more St. Louis city police officers.

The department received more than $8 million to train 50 officers.

Those officers will graduate from the police academy in the next three years.

The money comes from the Community Orientated Policing Services (COPS) program which provides money to police departments nationwide.

Right now, there are 1,290 officers in the department. Within the next month, that will grow to more than 1,300.
