JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri senators have endorsed legislation making the state Water Patrol a division of the Highway Patrol, a move supporters say could save millions of dollars.
The bill won first-round approval Tuesday and needs another vote before moving to the House. A similar idea was met with skepticism by a House committee last week.
The legislation would also move the Division of Alcohol and Tobacco Control from the Department of Public Safety into the Department of Revenue. The sponsor says the change would put local law enforcement agencies in charge of most enforcement of alcohol and tobacco laws.
Patrol merger is SB1057
