A bagel, extra crunchy peanut butter and a cup of water is all Sarah Shire needs to prepare for competition. The senior gymnast won first place overall in Saturday's NCAA Columbia Regional Gymnastics Competition.
Her teammate and best friend, 21-year-old senior gymnast Danielle Guider, says she and Shire are just normal college girls when they're not tumbling or balancing.
"We watch TV, go to the mall, joke around," Guider said.
In the words of MU gymnastics head coach Rob Drass, Shire has an infectious personality that adds positivity to any situation.
"When she's in a great mood, she pulls every one up with her," Drass said.
Shire was the top scorer at the regional competition and will compete with the rest of her team at the 2010 National Collegiate Women's Gymnastics Championships later this month.
She says her passion for gymnastics has only increased each year she competes and is looking forward to ending the season strong.
"This is my last year, so I'm trying to give it everything I've got," said Shire.
The team won the Columbia Regional for the first time in MU history with 196.500 points. The Tigers received the 10th seed position in the Nationals and will compete on Thursday, April 22 at 6 p.m. (CST).
