ALTON, Ill. (AP) -- A historic cemetery in southwest Illinois will be rededicated after its first extensive renovation in decades.
The Historic Alton National Cemetery will be rededicated Sunday afternoon. Featured speakers will include State Sen. William Haine of Alton.
The War Department built the cemetery and the Works Progress Administration dedicated it in 1941.
Hundreds of Americans who served in the armed forces are buried there, including 200 Civil War veterans.
The renovations include a new flag pole, landscaping, electrical work and repaired sidewalks.
