Mother seeks custody of severely beaten toddler

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) -- The mother of a two-year-old girl who was hospitalized more than two weeks after being severely beaten is asking for custody of the girl. Dawn Obptande is asking a St. Clair County judge to return Amanda Runyon to her.

Obptande's boyfriend, Kraig Monroe is accused of beating Amanda repeatedly because she wouldn't stop crying. He's charged with aggravated battery and is jailed on one half million dollars bail.

Obptande says she had no reason to believe Monroe would cause injury to Amanda.

A judge granted custody to Amanda's father who lives in Kentucky.
