Ex-East St. Louis official accused of tax evasion

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- A former East St. Louis councilman who had previously been convicted of vote fraud is in trouble again, this time for alleged federal election fraud and tax evasion.

Michael Collins was arrested and arraigned Thursday in an East St. Louis federal court on a federal indictment alleging three counts apiece of tax evasion, election fraud and failure to timely file tax returns, and one count of bank fraud.

The U.S. government says 48-year-old Collins lives in Swansea but falsely said he lived in East St. Louis and was elected a precinct committeeman. Collins is accused of tax-evasion charges for 2003 through 2005.

Collins served probation on a previous St. Clair County vote-fraud conviction.

A message left Friday with his attorney was not immediately returned.
