(KMOV) -- A local man is hospitalized after being trapped under a piece of construction equipment.
This happened around 1:30 p.m. Thursday at a construction site for a new grocery store on Highway M near I-55 in Jefferson County.
Authorities said a man running a walk behind trencher to install a sprinkler system at the store lost control of the machine and it tipped over pinning him. The machine, estimated to weigh between 2,500 to 4,000 lbs pounds, landed on his leg, arm and chest.
Authorities said he was trapped for about a half an hour before firefighters were able to free him. He was alert, talking and helping with the rescue effort the whole time. He was eventually airlifted to a local hospital. He is listed in serious condition.
Heavy equipment was used to help lift the machine off the victim, who in addition to being trapped was also in a pool of cold water and hydraulic fluid.
