Organizers announced the finalists on Wednesday. They include two teams from New York, one from Chicago, one from Berkeley, Calif., and a team made up of people from Germany and Los Angeles.
The teams consist of designers, landscape architects, urban planners and engineers.
The project is organized by a private foundation and the National Park Service, which oversees the Arch grounds.
Design concepts from the finalists will go on public display on Aug. 17. The design winner will be announced Sept. 24, with the goal to have the project constructed by Oct. 28, 2015 -- the 50th anniversary of completion of the Arch.
