WASHINGTON PARK, Ill. (AP) -- The son of Washington Park's mayor is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the conviction of his father's killer.

Police say 52-year-old Mayor John Thornton was shot three times at close range while sitting in his car Thursday. He was returning home from a second job.

His son, John Thornton Jr., says he hopes police can find whoever took his father away from the family.

Two people who police had identified as "persons of interest" in the killing were released without charges.

Meanwhile, funeral arrangements for the mayor have been set.

A wake is scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday, with the funeral immediately following at Mount Calvary Church in Washington Park.

L. King Funeral Chapel in Belleville is handling the arrangements.
