(KMOV) -- Two top military officials were at Scott Air Force Base Thursday.

General David Petraeus and Secretary of Defense Robert Gates are attending a ceremony at the base Thursday afternoon.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates presented the U.S. Transportation Command with the Joint Meritorious Unit Award. Secretary Gates started this award to recognize the men and women for their service in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Afghanistan. General David Petraeus will also be there to show his appreciation.

The men and women that were honored from the U.S. Transportation Command are a part of one of ten combat commands in the country. When there is a national or international event such as war or disaster, the U.S. Transportation Command makes sure aid and support arrive on the scene by providing air, land and sea transportation.
