(KMOV) -- Two East St. Louis residents are facing federal charges for stealing mail.
Prosecutors say 42-year-old Felicia F. Johnson and 24-year-old Marquan Johnson would check to see if mailbox flags were up in Metro East neighborhoods, and then look for checks.
The pair is accused of trying to alter the checks to make it look as though they were payable to them.
According to the Postal Inspector, to decrease the odds of having mail stolen, never leave mail in the box overnight. If there is concern that someone might be stealing mail, drop it off at the post office or a neighborhood mailbox.
