Researchers ask if new drug could help prevent prostate cancer

(KMOV) -- Approximately one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and a new study with research in St. Louis might save thousands of lives.

Researchers looked at whether some men undergo unnecessary treatment and suffer serious side effects like incontenence and impotence.

A drug called Dutasteride, marketed as Avodart, can eliminate a hormone from a man's body that plays the biggest role in the development of prostate cancer. Researchers are now curious as to whether or not Dutasteride could be used to treat prostate cancer.

News 4's Laurie Waters has more on the story.
