Officer David Haynes laid to rest

I've spent the last couple of hours outside the Cathedral Basillica in the Central West End where 27-year old St. Louis Police Officer David Haynes' funeral mass just ended.

The family asked the media stay outside but a family spokesperson along with Mayor Slay and Police Chief Isom spoke came over to say a few words about David Haynes before the funeral.

They spoke of his passion for serving his country as a Marine and his community as a cop. His widow's uncle said David had an intoxicating smile and personality and he left his mark on everyone he met.

When the casket was brought into the Cathedral it passed two groups of officers first. On the right stood Haynes' academy class. On the left were his colleagues from the second district.

Hundreds of officers from all over attended as they always do police funerals. What little we saw on the outside was beautifully done with cops standing at attention, a colorguard, bagpipes... very nice... very sad.

We were given Chief Dan Isom's remarks during the funeral mass. He wrapped up his speech by saying, "I promise the St. Louis Police Department will honor the debt David has paid by asking ourselves each day, how can we be more like Police Officer David A. Haynes with a singular selfless motivation no matter what the cost."
