Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter warms up as pitching coach Dave Duncan looks on before Friday's game between the Marlins and Cardinals. By Lakisha Jackson
PORT ST. LUCIE (KMOV) - Chris Carpenter makes his last start of spring training today against the New York Mets in what is the Cardinals' final road game of the spring in the state of Florida.
Carpenter hopes to build on his last Grapefruit League outing, a six inning, two hit, victory against the Mets in which he gave up only one run and struck out seven. That start comes one day after Cardinals manager Tony La Russa announced Carpenter will start Opening Day, his first such start since 2007.
Albert Pujols, Colby Rasmus, and Skip Schumaker are the most notable players missing from today's Red Bird lineup. Allen Craig will start at first base and do-it-all man Felipe Lopez will play at second. Joe Mather will make that start in center field.
