PORT ST. LUCIE (KMOV) - Rich Hill received word this morning of Cardinals management's decision to reassign him to Triple-A Memphis, where he will join the rotation hoping to get control of his command. Hill was originally supposed to start yesterday in a Triple-A game, but all minor-league games were cancelled due to rain.
Signed in the offseason as a non-roster invitee, Hill came into camp vying for the fifth and final spot in the starting rotation. However, the left-hander never showed the control needed for the big-league roster. In four appearances, Hill walked nine batters, including eight in his last two appearances.
The move removes the last hurdle for Jaime Garcia to officially become the fifth starter in the rotation, and only leaves two remaining spots on the final 25-man roster. It is presumed the candidates for those spots are Joe Mather, Nick Stavinoha, and Allen Craig (in no particular order).
