Metro East residents fighting proposed wheel tax

Belleville, Ill. (KMOV)-- Residents with cars registered in Belleville, Illinois are fighting a $20 wheel tax.

This is another example of a city struggling with a shortfall because it's not getting money from the state. The Belleville mayor told a packed house Monday evening that the state owes the city at least $1.3 million.

A "wheel tax" of $20 per car, possibly $15 for seniors and disabled could bring in $650,000 and save about two dozen city jobs.

Several city workers spoke in favor of the tax, but the majority were against it. On April 5th city leaders will vote on it.
