JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) -- People Magazine has named the superintendent of the Joplin School District one of its 2011 heroes.
The Joplin Globe reports (http://bit.ly/vH3Hi7 ) that superintendent C.J. Huff appears in the 2011 Heroes Among Us Awards in the Nov. 7 issue. He was chosen as one of six winners.
Huff won the award for his efforts in reopening schools damaged by the May 22 tornado. Five school buildings were destroyed in the storm, which also killed 162 people and damaged a large part of the southwest Missouri city.
It's unclear how Huff was selected for the magazine's feature. A magazine representative said the company doesn't comment on its editorial processes.
But in the article, Huff was credited with keeping an "around-the-clock vigil" after the tornado, directing school buses and comforting victims.
